What is a good no-pellet rabbit diet?
Processed rabbit pellets are costing me $17 for a 50# bag of 18% protein.. it’s a cheap feed and this new batch is 1/3 dust! Which doesn’t make it cheap anymore.. it’s just a nasty feed but I can’t get another brand here (I’ve checked and there are only 2 brands available here and the other option is even worse nutritionally then what I’m getting now.. though hard to believe).I’ve been feeding 2/3 C feed each rabbit with an average weight of 10.5 pounds per rabbit… but they are losing weight on the 2/3 C feed (they were on free-feed before last week). They also get a lot of good grass hay (I try to give hay free-feed but it’s always gone when I get home and refill). Fresh veggies are out of the question.. I have 40+ rabbits and live in a very cold climate so Barley Grass Growing market veggies are very expensive. In warm months I grow a garden for the rabbits of oats/barley and cut a lot of fresh grass… but the growing season has been over now for some time.I need a grain mix to feed or supplement with… but I haven’t been able to find a good website with a complete diet. Answer #1 – I have been avoiding fruits because of the sugars since they are not very digestable for rabbits and the sugars can break their teeth down.. so I don’t think that can be an option.Answer #2 – We are getting a good grass now (paragraph 2, sentence 2 of the description of my question).. I am trying my best for it to be free-feed but there are a few hours a day they run out.. but they are still losing weight even with the additional 2/3 C. 18% alfalfa based pellets.Answerer #1 – My apologies.. I read your response wrong. I see now you have fruit as a treat not part of regular diet. *duh* I know they love rolled oats.. we were doing that for awhile to just supplement with the feed because it cost less per pound but I really need to find a way to get away from pelleted feed all together. There was a time in the last century when there wasn’t processed feed for rabbits available and people raised more then just a couple at a time (just a couple and you could probably feed exclusively kitcken veggie scraps from cooking or let one run and free-range supervised. I raise English Lops and French Lops.. the English Lops take a lot more feed to keep weight on. I used to raise Hollands.. easier to keep condition on them.. maybe we’ll just have to get out of the big breeds to manage feed costs.
